Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement

The arthroscope is a fibre-optic telescope that can be inserted into a joint (commonly the knee, shoulder and ankle) to evaluate and treat a number of conditions. A camera is attached to the arthroscope and the picture is visualized on a TV monitor. Most arthroscopic surgeries are performed as a Day- Care procedure and are usually done under general/regional anaesthesia. Knee arthroscopy is a common procedure.

Arthroscopy is useful in evaluating and treating the following conditions:

  1. Excision of torn floating meniscus ( Partial Menisectomy)
  2. Meniscus Repair
  3. ACL ( Anterior Cruciate Ligament) Reconstruction
  4. Removal of loose bodies (cartilage or bone that has broken off) and cysts.
  5. Reconstruction of the PCL (Posterior Cruciate ligament)
  6. Patello-femoral (knee-cap) disorders
  7. Washout of infected knees
  8. General diagnostic purposes
    • Anterior cruciate ligament injuries occur most often in the sporting population. Anterior cruciate ligament most commonly get torn with major sporting injury but can also happen with other modes of trauma like RTA or fall from stairs etc. The anterior cruciate ligament is the primary stabiliser of the knee joint. Thigh and calf muscles are secondary stabilisers of the knee joint.

  • If you have torn your anterior cruciate ligament you usually have a sudden twisting movement with your leg fixed on the ground. A snap or pop may be heard and the knee usually swells up within a few hours. The ligament can break from mid substance or from tibial or femoral attachment. Ligament cannot heal or repair itself after complete tear. Even partial tear may also give instability to knee. Once ACL get torn knee become unstable and patient may have give way feeling.
  • ACL injury can be associated with other ligament injuries like MCL, PCL, LCL or with Cartilage and meniscus injuries.
  • Primary treatment in such situation is to give support and management of pain with cold therapy and medication. X-ray examination is helpful to rule out associated fracture. Confirmation of diagnosis needs MRI scan.
  • An anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is recommended in patients whose knees give way on repeated occasions. If you have built up your thigh muscles and your knee does not give way then an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction may not be necessary. There is a theoretical argument to do an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in order to preserve the knee for the future.

Knee replacement surgery is most commonly done joint replacement surgery done all over world. These days in knee replacement surgery only worn out cartilage surface is removed. Knee is made up of three compartments and depending upon no. and severity of involved compartments, decision of partial and total knee replacement is usually taken.

Dr Bharat Bahre is experienced in performing both Total and Partial Knee replacement surgery. He has been trained to perform Robotic partial and total knee replacement with Hand held robotic arm (Navio, Smith Nephew USA ) which is latest technique in the field of knee replacement.

Shoulder is one of the most flexible joint of our body. However, this range of motion can lead to shoulder pain or discomfort.

In most cases, pain in the shoulder can be the result of one of five main causes:

  • Inflammation – leading to pain
  • Instability – leading to dislocation and pain
  • Rotator Cuff tear – leading to pain and weakness of shoulder
  • Arthritis – leading to pain and stiffness
  • Fracture

Shoulder pathologies or injuries can present as:

  • Pain and stiffness in or around the shoulder joint
  • Limited shoulder mobility or stiffness
  • Difficulty and/or inability to do overhead activity
  • Shoulder joint pain specially at night
  • A popping or grinding feeling when using the affected shoulder

Whether you’re suffering from a recent injury, such as a rotator cuff tear or shoulder dislocation, or the pain in your shoulder has developed over time from shoulder bursitis or tendonitis (medically referred to as tendinitis), we at women and ortho care shoulder clinic are well equipped to treat you using various modalities like Injections, Physiotherapy, Arthroscopy and open surgery.

Dr Bharat Bahre has done fellowship in Shoulder arthrocsocpy and sports medicine and has vast experience of managing shoulder problems.

Our clinic provides best in class care for trauma and fracture patient. We have digital X ray facility at our clinic to diagnose fractures. We have plaster room and minor procedure room facility at our clinic to manage routine fractures and minor injuries. For all those patient who have major bone fractures or poly-trauma cases we have tie up with Aakash Healthcare Superspeciality hospital, where Dr. Bharat Bahre is working as Associate Director and Senior consultant, Dept of orthopaedics.

Most sports injuries are due to either trauma or overuse of muscles or joints. The majority are caused by minor trauma involving muscles, ligaments, tendons, or bones, including:

  • Contusions (bruises)
  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations

Some Common Sports injuries

  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis). Lateral epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow, is characterized by pain in the back side of the elbow and forearm, along the thumb side when the arm is alongside the body with the thumb turned away. The pain is caused by damage to the tendons that bend the wrist backward away from the palm.
  • Golfer’s or baseball elbow (medial epicondylitis). Medial epicondylitis, also known as golfer’s elbow, is characterized by pain from the elbow to the wrist on the palm side of the forearm. The pain is caused by damage to the tendons that bend the wrist toward the palm.
  • Lumbar strain. A lumbar strain is an injury to the lower back, which results in damaged tendons and muscles that spasm and feel sore. Trauma of great force can injure the tendons and muscles in the lower back. Pushing and pulling sports, such as weight lifting or football, can lead to a lumbar strain. In addition, sports that need sudden twisting of the lower back, such as basketball, baseball, and golf can lead to this injury.
  • Jumper’s knee. Jumper’s knee, also known as patellar tendonitis, is a condition characterized by inflammation of the patellar tendon, which connects the kneecap to shin bone (tibia). The condition may be caused by overuse of the knee joint, such as frequent jumping on hard surfaces.

Runner’s knee. Runner’s knee, also known as patellofemoral stress syndrome, is when the patella, or kneecap, does not move well in the groove of the femur (thigh bone). Runner’s knee may be caused by a structural defect, or a certain way of walking or running.

Total hip replacement surgery, also called arthroplasty, is an option for many suffering with pain from dysplasia or osteoarthritis, a disease that involves the breakdown of cartilage in one or more joints. This causes bones in the affected area to grind against each other, causing severe pain and limited joint mobility.

The first total hip replacement surgery was performed more than 40 years ago, and since then, millions of people have received hip replacements. Total hip replacement involves removing the diseased bone and cartilage and resurfacing it with orthopedic implants.

During the surgery, the bones in the hip are exposed by an incision made on the side of the hip. The damaged sections of bone are removed to make room for the replacement components. The thighbone receives a metal alloy stem and ball, and the pelvis receives a metal cup and liner. The implants are designed to create a new smoothly functioning joint that prevents painful bone-on-bone contact. There are several materials that can be used to line the socket in your pelvis including highly cross linked polyethylene (plastic) or ceramic to act as healthy cartilage. We will evaluate your specific condition and discuss which option will provide the most favorable results for you.

Benefits of Total Hip Replacement Eliminate pain

  • Enhance movement and mobility
  • Improve quality of life
  • Return to normal activity

Total hip replacement is an option available to you. Only we can determine if you are a candidate for this implant or if another type of implant would better suit your unique situation.
